Spontaneous regression of meningiomas after interruption of nomestrol acetate: a series of three patients (2019)
Summary
CONTEXT :
The relationship between the increase in the incidence and growth of meningiomas and long -term hormonal therapy with cyproterone acetate (AC) in women has been recently established in the literature. Following the awareness of hormonal treatment, we describe a potential relationship between the progesterone agonist, nomestrol acetate (NMG), and the growth of meningiomas.
Methods:
After implementing a screening protocol to detect potential interactions between hormonal exposure and the appearance of meningiomas, we identified patients taking NMG and in whom meningioma had been diagnosed recently. The NMG was arrested and these patients were closely monitored both clinically and radiologically. A retrospective volumetric analysis of tumors was carried out on imaging.
RESULTS :
Three patients were identified for the study. After stopping the NMG, the reduction in the tumor was documented for all meningiomas during the first month. Up to 70 % of the reduction in the volume of the tumor was observed during the first year of follow -up in one of them. None of the patients have developed new symptoms.
CONCLUSION :
We report the first cases of meningiomas reacting to stopping hormonal therapy with the NMG. As with cases associated with long -term AC taking, tumor reduction and improving clinical symptoms can be observed after stopping the NMG.
