Androcur and meningiomas

Cyproterone acetate ( Androcur) multiplies the risks of appearance of meningioma , a tumor that develops in the meninges, that is to say the membranes that wrap the brain and spinal cord.

When a woman takes this medication, she is 20 times more likely to develop meningioma

A study carried out by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) and by health insurance and relating to 250,000 women taking Androcur shows that this drug increases the risks of meningioma appearance .

For women, treated in high doses by Androcur , for 6 months, the risk is multiplied by 7 and 20 if the treatment lasts 5 years .

This risk was specified in 2011 on the medication instructions, without the patients being informed individually, whether by the ANSM (drug safety agency) or by the Bayer laboratory.

Doctors who prescribe this drug inform their patients very little.

Prescriptions diverted from their MA (marketing authorization).

The Androcur has been prescribed in tens of thousands of women since the 1980s.

This medication should be prescribed to women with hyper hair and men for prostate cancer. Women have been prescribed for many other reasons: acne, endometriosis, etc ... and even contraceptive pill!
